Position Purpose:
The Environmental Specialist is responsible to develop and administer Environmental Programs for the Peoria Tribe. This position is responsible for writing grants for environmental programs and special environmental projects and ensuring the grant program guidelines are followed. In addition, she/he will be responsible for fulfilling the requirements of Tribal grants relating to what is assigned. This position will be responsible for Natural Resources Damage Assessment and Restoration processes. This position will also be required to assist at the Tribes Aquatic facility and Ranch as needed. This position may require a lot of outdoor time and can be very labor-intensive. This position reports directly to the Natural Resources Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Meet with Federal, State, local, and Tribal environmental agencies to coordinate/discussenvironmental programs.
  • Maintain program/project files and records.
  • Work with other programs to meet the environmental needs of the Tribe.
  • Keep current on program/grant regulations and changes.
  • Organize work in a timely manner to meet all deadlines and schedules.
  • Conduct meetings/discussions with Tribal/community members to identify, prioritize, anddocument community concerns.
  • Travel both in and out of state for necessary trainings.
  • Learning regulations and continually updated versions.
  • Utilize GPS/GIS technology.
  • Comply with all reporting requirements of grants.
  • Develop and administer outreach programs.
  • Take water, sediment, soil, and tissue samples.
  • Maintain and enter sample data into appropriate databases.
  • Serve as a representative of the Tribe relating to all environmental protection issues.
  • Know Environmental Protection Laws and amendments and stay current on changes.
  • Ensure all consultations and correspondence are followed up in a timely manner until completed.
  • Represent the Tribe on the Tar Creek Trustee Council (TCTC), TCTC Indian Tribes, and other environment/wildlife-related working groups.
  • Manage TCTC projects related to the Tribe.
  • Review TCTC documents for accuracy and content, including invoices, resolutions, and legal documents. Secure appropriate signatures as required.
  • Assist with river research projects such as mussel and fish surveys.
  • Assist the Aquatic Facility with working fish and ponds as needed
  • Assist the Ranch with cattle and field work as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • A Bachelors Degree is preferred, with a focus on Biology, Agriculture, or other environmental-related coursework.
  • More than one year of water quality sampling and experience
  • Related work experience and/or higher education preferred.
  • N.R.D.A.R. experience preferred.
  • Able to run mowers and other equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including grant writing.
  • Proficiency with computers and programs such as Microsoft Office, Word Perfect, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet.
  • Organization and record-keeping skills are necessary for accurate maintenance of files, correspondence, records, and follow-up.
  • Must be able to handle confidential and sensitive material/information with discretion.
  • Must be able to conduct meetings/discussions with Tribal Citizens and community members.
  • Must be willing and able to learn. As well as self-motivated.
  • Must have reliable transportation with current liability insurance, valid driver’s license, and good driving record.
  • Must be able to drive trucks, boats, as well as haul trailers.
  • Must be willing and able to work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to work in a multitude of river/creek/water environments for research purposes.
Certifications:
  • Valid Driver’s License and Insurance.
Conditions of Employment:
  • The Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma operates a drug-free workplace.
  • May be required to submit to and pass an applicable drug test and background check.
  • Adhere to all work rules, policies & procedures, and safety standards.
Work Requirements:Position involves prolonged sitting, stooping, bending, lifting, or carrying up to 30 pounds on a daily basis. Work is generally performed in an office environment with varying levels of lighting, air quality, noise, and/or temperature. Work will also include working outside in extreme heat and or cold for prolonged periods of time. When conducting fish of mussel surveys, will be expected to be in the river/creek/or pond to facilitate the survey.
